Biography: Lee White

Lee White is an artist, author, athlete and activist from Pemberton, BC. He integrates writing and painting with mountaineering instruction and photography to communicate his profound love of the natural world.

Born in North Vancouver in 1970, Lee is third generation West Coast. Progressive and liberal parenting lent well to early arts development. After moving north to Whitehorse at five, Lee developed a bizarre kindred friendship with painter Ted Harrison and became inspired to draw and paint.

Lee completed high school at Ridley College were he studied writing with Richard B. Wright, recent recipient of the Giller Prize and The Governor Generals Award. After which Lee declined Ivy League recruitment and returned to B.C.to be closer to mountains.

At 20 Lee left the University of Victoria for Yosemite Valley and became inspired to both climb and write. He began a rather hefty project drafting a novel. A project which has evolved into and then we dance, which will be in print this year. After nearly two years in South Africa, Lee integrated a great deal of cultural learning into the original novel concept about the climbing lifestyle.

Lee began working as both a backcountry guide and a youth worker for wilderness programs in 1992, facilitating a lifestyle balance between art, writing, adventuring, and a career kind to each. Considerable travel and deep wilderness experiences impacted Lee’s worldview and continues to inspire an eclectic proliferation of artwork in many media.

After a near fatal accident in 1998, Lee applied a great deal more time and energy to his art. Doctor’s described his healing from a crippling injury “miraculous”, which Lee retorted with his unique philosophy book: rapt in awe: releasing the inner freak, a lyrical revisioning of reality which integrates mythic archetypes with cosmology. The spoken word version is in the works.

Lee continues to experiment with new media for expression. He is currently developing an e-card site on the world wide web to proliferate peace propaganda, and host a virtual gallery.
